He Bayern Munich announced this Wednesday the signing of the goalkeeper coach michael rechner from HoffenheimBundesliga rivals, after the controversial sacking of Toni Tapalovic which left Manuel Neuer very concerned.
The Bavarian club said the 42-year-old Rechner would join the team’s coaching staff, but gave no details on the length of his contract. Bayern fired Tapalovic a few days ago as a result of what the club’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic called “differences in ways and means of working together.” That drew sharp criticism from Manuel Neuer, who has been working with Tapalovic since they were both at Schalke.
In fact, they joined Bayern together in 2011 and Neuer said their dismissal was “the worst thing I’ve ever experienced in my career”, infuriating a Bayern goalkeeper who preferred to tell them that in private and not in an interview they didn’t expect. Tapalovic did not get along with Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann, whose relationship with Neuer is reportedly good.
A former goalkeeper for VfR and Waldhof Mannheim, Sachsen Leipzig, Schweinfurt and others, Rechner began training with Hoffenheim’s U19 team in 2008 and took over as goalkeeping coach for the senior team in 2015. “We are sad to see you go.” , said Hoffenheim sports director Alexander Rosen.
