a controversial video

In a video uploaded on social networks in March 2019 after Manchester United’s victory over PSG (1-3 in Paris) in the round of 16 (second leg) of the Champions League, the former Mancunian defender and captain said club: ” Paris , you gays, you gays… Here, men are talking”.

Mousse and Stop Homophobia, supported by the anti-homophobia collective Rouge Direct, filed a complaint for “public insult to a group of people because of their sexual orientation”.

The investigating judge classified the facts as a “non-public insult” and referred the case to the jurisdiction of the police, considering that Evra “expressed himself in a private setting to make a video that was later uploaded to Snapchat.” without your knowledge.

Evra abided by the verdict

“Patrice Evra accepted the decision, as a simple police fine that ends an excessive controversy,” Jérôme Boursican, the former player’s lawyer, reacted today. “Patrice Evra has actively spoken out against homophobia and reaffirmed his fight against all forms of discrimination.”

The prosecution, satisfied

In a press release, Étienne Deshoulières, a lawyer for the associations, stated that “the homophobic comments of a personality like Patrice Evra incite hatred and violence against LGBT people, especially in countries where homosexuality is criminally suppressed, like in Senegal, the country where Patrice Evra is from.”

During the trial on December 15, the prosecutor requested a fine of 1,500 euros, including 300 suspended euros, considering that it is the “responsibility” of Patrice Evra as a “media personality” to “maintain a civic and respectful speech to all” .

In defense of Evra, Jérôme Boursican said he did not “want to hurt the homosexual community”. “What he’s aiming for is PSG,” he assured and recalled that the former player had published an apology video the day after it was broadcast.
