Leipzig defender Willi Orban will be a donor this Wednesday of stem cells for a leukemia patient in hopes of helping save his life. Orban, an international for Hungary but born in Kaiserslautern, is a doubt for Saturday’s Bundesliga match against Union Berlin, something, the fact that it is a doubt, which neither Orban nor his team gives of importance due to the magnitude of the situation.
Orban, 30, has been on the German national registry of bone marrow donors for the past six years and it was recently found to be compatible for a patient suffering from leukemia.
“Now I can give other people a second chance,” the club said in a statement. Orban has been absent from training since Sunday to prepare for Wednesday’s donation.
“I have the opportunity to potentially save someone else’s life with very little effort. I hope my donation will help the recipient recover from his illness. Of course, I might miss the Union game, but in that case football is of secondary importance,” Orban said.
Leipzig is in fourth place with 36 points, 3 behind Union and 4 behind leader Bayern Munich.
