Newcastle continue without a win and are not putting United under pressure

Date:

Newcastle entered an irregular phase in the Premier League and today they left a new tie with their visit to Bournemouth, penultimate ranking (1-1). It was the fifth game in the last six days for the ‘magpies’, who were unable to put pressure on Manchester United ahead of tomorrow’s match against Leeds and are two points behind rivals Barça in the Europa League.

Bournemouth, one of the lowest scoring teams in the Premier League, moved up the scoreboard by shocking the least beaten team. Nick Pope, who last week against West Ham (1-1) ended a run of six consecutive games without seeing his goal scored, surprised after half an hour with a perfectly executed corner.

Senesi made it 1-0 from a corner

Hamed Traoré fired it in at the near post, Jefferson Lerma headed it to second and Marcos Senesi only had to push the ball into the net.

Bournemouth, up to their necks in water, were fighting hard for permanence and had already given a warning after a quarter of an hour with another header from Dominic Solanke that was adjusted to the post which was answered by replied Pope.

Newcastle haven’t played since September

Newcastle, based on its defensive strength, were forced to play against the tide for the first time in the Premier since September 17, when Bournemouth themselves advanced to St James’ Park in the first round match (1-1).

Without the suspended Bruno Guimaraes, the ‘magpies’ game lacked fluidity and did not know how to create chances until Miguel Almirón came to his rescue again in the first half with his tenth league goal of the season.

Almirón is tied

In a move made by new signing Anthony Gordon, a new signing for 45 million euros, the Paraguayan striker grabbed the rebound from goalkeeper Neto after a whiplash from Sean Longstaff to cross the ball into the net with aplomb.

After the break the balance of forces was maintained, Newcastle did not observe on the field the huge difference in the table position of both teams and could even be satisfied with the draw.

Newcastle’s only clear-cut chance came in the 70th minute when Neto saved a shot from Allan Saint-Maximin and Gordon’s subsequent point-blank shot.

Trippier avoids 2-1

In regulation time, Kieran Trippier saved Newcastle from defeat by taking, in cold blood, a Solanke spur shot on the same goal line. It was not the best afternoon for the ‘magpies’ as, in addition, Joseph Willock, Almirón and Saint-Maximin withdrew with discomfort.

Bournemouth are still in the penultimate and have gone seven games without a win, although at least they have avoided their sixth defeat in this negative streak which they have not been able to get out of.
