SPAL, the Italian Serie B team, has fired Daniele De Rossi, 2006 world champion and former Roma and Boca Juniors player, as coach. He was replaced by Massimo Oddo, another member of the ‘Azzurra’ team that won the title in Germany.
“SPAL announces that Daniele De Rossi has been dismissed from his position as first team coach. The club thanks the manager and the members of his squad for the work done in recent months, wishing them the best of professional luck in future of their careers” , informed SPAL of Ferrara.
De Rossi arrived on October 11 on the bench of a SPAL located in fourteenth place in the table and left him in third from last position, directly relegated, although only three points from thirteenth.
the pre-existing condition does not work
Even the arrival as winter reinforcement of Belgian Radja Nainggolan, his former Roma team-mate just two games under De Rossi’s command, could not end a poor run by a SPAL that added three successive defeats and four that consecutive games to no avail.
De Rossi has been in 17 games in charge of SPAL between Serie B and Coppa Italia, with a record of three wins, six draws and eight defeats.
From ‘azzurra’ to SPAL
At 39 years old, SPAL is not his first experience from the bench. As soon as his career as a footballer ended, he joined the team of ‘azzurro’ coach Roberto Mancini, with whom he was declared European champion in 2021, at Wembley.
Legend of Roma, a team where he spent 18 seasons, all his professional career except the last, before his retirement where he played for Argentine Boca Juniors, he played as a player in 616 games in total, of which 459 were in Serie A. He is the second player with the most appearances in Roma history, behind only Francesco Totti.
