The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) will punish teams that commit acts of racism with the loss of points, according to league law approved this Tuesday by twenty-first division clubs.
In a statement, the CBF announced that it would “severely punish racist offences” and pointed out that it was the first entity in the world to consider in competition regulations the possibility of “punishing a sporting club in cases of racism”.
The proposal approved by the first division clubs will be extended to the Brazil Cup, a tournament that will bring together almost a hundred teams from different categories from the 27 states of the country and will start on February 22.
“The fight against racism is in a hurry. Measures have been discussed for a century and we have never put them into practice,” said the CBF president, ednaldo rodriguesquoted in the statement.
In addition to the sports sanction, “any act of racism or discrimination” will be notified to the Public Ministry (prosecutor’s office) and the Civil Police “so that the process does not die only in the field of sports and the offenders are punished by law ,” he added.
Acts committed by fans are also considered within the measure guaranteeing the loss of points for the offending team.
On January 11, the president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvaauthorized legislation equating racial slurs to racism, with increased penalties for crimes committed at sporting or cultural events.
More foreigners
In addition, the twenty clubs specified on Tuesday to increase from five to seven the number of foreign players registered by each team.
The council also approved the calendar, which for the first time considered the dates of FIFA and will stop for friendly selection matches.
“That is an old request from the clubs and that will finally be addressed by the CBF,” the president of the entity declared in a statement, ednaldo rodrigueswhose decision will value the Brazilian Championship and the national team.
The tournament, which will continue in an “all against all” format over two rounds, will be held between April 15 and December 3.
The official championship ball is the Nike Flight and the VAR will use the “accuracy” technology already used in the leagues of England, Spain and the Netherlands and in official tournaments organized by FIFA.
