Galatasaray players have decided to donate their salaries to the victims of the earthquake that caused more than 35,000 deaths in Turkey and left millions of people homeless.
“Many of our players have given their salaries for earthquake relief operations,” Galatasaray president Dursun Özbek announced at a press conference without giving further details.
Galatasaray, as well as Fenerbahçe and Besiktas, the other two big clubs in Istanbul, have also launched donation campaigns by sending aid trucks to the country’s earthquake-ravaged southern and southeastern provinces. on February 6.
The Turkish Super League was suspended after the earthquake and will resume on March 3. Galatasaray is the leader after 22 days.
Two teams withdrew
Meanwhile, Hatayspor and Gaziantep decided to withdraw from the competition. These two clubs are located in provinces particularly affected by the earthquake.
Christian Atsu, Hatayspor’s Ghanaian striker, is still missing nine days after the earthquake.
