Italy asked Robinho to serve his sentence in Brazil

Date:

Italy demanded that Robinho serve 9 years in prison for rape in their country of origin, according to local media reports, citing the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In a statement, Brazil’s ministry confirmed it had received such a request without naming the player.

The request will be reviewed by the Justice Ministry’s Asset Repatriation and International Legal Cooperation Department, the ministry added.

Robinhowhose full name is Robson de Souza, lives in Brazil and has always denied the allegations. Earlier this week, the Italian Ministry of Justice issued an international arrest warrant for the player after Italy’s high court upheld his rape conviction in January.

But the South American country does not extradite its citizens, which means Robinho can only be arrested if he travels abroad.

In 2017, a court was found in Milan Robinho and five other Brazilians are guilty of gang rape of a woman after giving him alcohol in a nightclub. The judgment was upheld by the appeals court in 2020 and validated by Supreme Court of Italy last month.

His lawyer confirmed this.

The lawyer of the former Brazilian soccer player announced this Saturday that, if the sentence of the Italian Justice sentencing him to nine years in prison for rape is approved, the sentence will be served in Brazil.

“The possibility of serving the sentence (in the country) is provided by international cooperation agreements” in Italy, the former striker’s defense lawyer, Leonardo Pantaleão, declared in an interview with CNN Brazil.

On Friday, the Italian Justice held a petition before the Brazilian authorities so that, due to the impossibility of extradition, Robinho served the sentence in a federal prison in the country.

“The laws allow the execution of custodial sentences for crimes committed by Brazilians outside the national territory,” Pantaleão said.

The sentence of the Italian Justice must be approved by the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), the second highest court in Brazil, and “when everything is correct within the Brazilian rules, this is a process that should not take long ,” he added. .
