Yago Aguirre: “Studies are important, but I always wanted to be a cyclist”

Date:

Life is for the brave and Yago Aguirre This is one of them. The young cycling fan (18 years old), who expressed himself Spain junior champion last year in Valladoliddecided to abandon the team discipline that had seen him grow and thrive, Donostial village Bizikletanand signed for the German team Sarees Rouvy Sauerlandwhich would allow him to combine his mathematical studies with University of Groningen (Netherlands). Yago knows that carving a future is very complicated, both in pedaling and in mathematics, but he hopes to fulfill his dream since he was a child, since he was four or five years old enjoying the stages of Tour de France with his grandfather.

Yago, where does your passion for cycling come from?

I always thought my love for cycling came from spending summer afternoons watching the Tour de France with my grandfather since I was 4 or 5 years old.

And when did you start cycling?

I remember that when the stages of the Tour de France were over I would get on my bike. And even though I’ve tried other sports, I can’t tell you why, but cycling always stands out from the rest.

What other sports do you practice or have you practiced?

I have tried many sports such as athletics or judo among others, but for several years I focused only on cycling.

When did you decide you wanted to be a cyclist?

I’ve always wanted to be a cyclist, it’s something I’ve dreamed about since I was little.

What does winning the Spanish Junior Championship in Valladolid mean to you?

On the one hand, I know I’m still the same, and that winning the Championship won’t make me better, but on the other hand, it’s opened a lot of doors for me when it comes to talking to teams and interacting with more large teams. for the future.

How would you define yourself as a cyclist? You are a good finisher and sprinter, right?

I would say that I am quite off-road, I manage well on the hills and on the flat and I can hold my own in the sprint, but my best quality is the bottom line. Usually, the longer and harder the race, the better I perform.

Who was your idol when you were little and who do you want to be like now at the age of 18?

My idol as a child was Alberto Contador, and right now I like the way a Van Der Poel or a Pogacar runs, always very aggressive.

How did you decide to become a mathematician and study in the Netherlands?

At the beginning of my second year in high school, I wasn’t sure what to study, but as the year went by I realized that Mathematics was the career I wanted the most, and I saw the option to go to the Netherlands and that could continue cycling and I liked the idea.

I suppose your parents told you a thousand times that the first thing is education. Is it clear to you that the priority is education and that making a living from cycling is very difficult?

Obviously studying is very important, but I also know that in cycling I have an opportunity that I have to take advantage of, so as long as I can I will do both at the highest level, and my family will always support me. here in.

Did you have offers from other teams before signing for German Saris Rouvy Sauerland?

Yes, I had offers from several teams, but some required me to move from Groningen, and therefore not be able to study, even in the way I planned, and with Saris Rouvy Sauerland everything fits perfectly.

A cycling dream you want to make come true?

A great cycling dream is to be at the start of a Tour de France.

Do you prefer classics or grand tours?

It remains to be seen, but I would say that I prefer the grand tours to the classics.

And, you will give everything possible to become a professional cyclist, right?

Of course I would give everything to one day make a living from cycling.

By the way, where do you live in Groningen?

In Groningen (The Netherlands) I live in a student residence, but it has nothing to do with the team.

And you just signed on for a year.

I think the best thing is to sign for just one year, and for one year to have a chance to see where I am and what is best for me.
