The Colombian cyclist Jerome Jaramillo16 years old, died this Thursday after an accident the previous day when he was competing in Classic Rionegroin the department of Antioquia (northwest).
The Antioquia Cycling League detailed in a statement that the young man, from the Itaca-Cobelén team, suffered “an accident during the construction of the second stage very close to the finish line in the municipality of Puerto Triunfo.”
“After the accident, all methods were activated to help him and preserve his life. Jerónimo was transferred to the Puerto Boyacá Hospital where he was stabilized and later to the Somer Clinic in Rionegro,” he added.
“In the early hours of Thursday, Jerónimo died as a result of the accident, a situation that filled the entire caravan with great sadness,” Liga reported.
The death of the young cyclist caused an uproar in the country.
“We regret the death of the young cyclist Jerónimo Jaramillo, a member of the Itaca – Cobelén team, who had an accident yesterday in stage 2 of the Rionegro Clásica,” Team Medellín EPM wrote on its social networks.
The governor of Antioquia, Aníbal Gaviria, said: “We are deeply saddened by the death of the cyclist Jerónimo Jaramillo, a young man full of talent, illusions and with an enormous career ahead of him who left us so soon. Unity and strength for his family, friends and the Antioquia Cycling League community”.
