The City Council of Naples returned this Thursday the statue of Diego Armando Maradona donated by the Italian artist Domenico Sepe to the city in 2021, on the occasion of the first anniversary of the death of the star in Argentina, because the work has a higher value than the 30,000 euros, which was initially said to cost.
More than a year ago, on November 25, 2021, the City of Naples presented around the San Paolo Stadium – now called Diego Armando Maradona Stadium – a statue of the legend of the partenopeio team donated by Domenico Sepe to commemorate the first anniversary of his death.
Once the statue was presented to the press and personalities such as the president of the club, Aurelio De Laurentiis, it was withdrawn to complete the rest of the necessary documents for its subsequent exhibition.
An unfinished bureaucratic process
However, far from completing this bureaucratic process and after an investigation by the authorities, as reported by the newspaper ‘Il Mattino’, the Neapolitan City Council decided that the statue was more important than said and, therefore, had to be returned. to the donor.
The Neapolitan City Council claimed, according to the aforementioned newspaper, that a donation must be proportional to the spending possibilities of the donor and that, since neither Sepe enjoys “great economic possibilities” and that the statue is worth more than 30,000 euros, it can not be accepted as a donation.
In addition, according to the City Council, “the installation of work in the stadium seems capable of returning to the donor an important benefit in terms of prestige and visibility”, something that “can be attractive and debatable by other artists”.
The artist, “deeply offended”
For his part, the artist, who was not notified of his job back, told the Italian newspaper that he feels “deep bitterness about this situation” and that he will give a press conference to tell “his truth. “
“I also feel offended by the part in which I am supposed to get fame from the work, as if it was just started…”, added the creator of a statue that, yes, has caused controversy since its exhibition in by placing the ball. on the right foot of the star.
