The Spanish Fernando Alonsodouble world champion of Formula One, declared this Thursday, after shooting for the first time “seriously” with the car of his new team, Aston Martinthat “overall” he was “satisfied with” his “first day of testing the AMR23 on Bahrain“.
“Overall, I enjoyed the first official test here in Bahrain with the AMR23. As a team we did a total of 100 laps, which was a strong start to the first day, despite some small problems that we solved.” commented Alonso, who is only 29 thousandths off the best time of the day – set by the two-time Dutch world champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull) – and this Friday he will ride in two sessions, as announced by his new team; that he has not specified what will be the third and final day of testing, on Saturday.
“We are still trying a lot of different things, so every lap is important; and we learn things about the car every time we go out on track,” explained the great Asturian driver after his first day of testing his new car, at the Sakhir circuit, where he celebrated three of his 32 victories in the premier class: in 2005 and 2006, when he won his two World Cups; and in 2010.
“These first steps always bring a certain intrigue; and for now I am enjoying this part of the winter preparation,” said Alonso, who repeated the Bahraini track sixty times in the afternoon session, where he did his fastest lap on the medium compound tire.
“We will use the information and what we learned in today’s session to optimize things more tomorrow,” said the Asturian double world champion on Thursday at the circuit outside Manama, the capital of the Arabian kingdom that in the first week of March will host the first of 23 races of the next Formula One World Championship.
