The Alcantarilla team takes a breather in their fight to ensure durability, defeating an Araski that was superior only in the last quarter
The Hozono Global Jairis returned to Fausto Vicent this Sunday, doing so through the front door, after the break for the national team matches and the resumption of the competition away from home. Facing another crucial clash to lay the groundwork for sustainability, the sewer club responded in style. He managed to beat Kutxabank Araski of Vitoria and got a revitalizing victory.
The team led by Eric Surís took to the track with Tamara Seda, María Bettencourt, Claudia Contell, Belén Arrojo and Shante Evans. The sewers, with a good defense from the start, could not show their face in the attack. So it was necessary to wait until almost minute three to see the first basket of the game, via Chatrice White, who had her answer in the hands of Shante Evans.
Bettencourt (16), Contell (5), Arrojo (6), Evan (4), Seda (9) -starting five- Konig (16), Brcaninovic (11), De Souza (11), Fernandes and Cotano.
Asurmendi (10), Chagas (2), Atkinson (23), Burani (6), White (12) -starting quintet- Holopainen (8), Van den Adel (3), Alarcón (6), Diarra (4) and Castilian.
Araski proposed a defense in the zone that outnumbered the locals, with White as the undisputed protagonist, dominating the Basque score early on and forcing Surís’ first timeout, with the score at 2–8. Érika de Souza then took the lead role in the painting and was assisted by another colossal Bettencourt to bring about the equaliser.
Hozono Global Jairis had a great close to the first period, with De Souza dominating and cementing the comeback with a fantastic three-pointer from Aislinn Konig (14-13), just over a minute to end a quarter that ended on 16 .
The visitors initially reacted after the restart, but then the local rush came and made the success count from the outside, with three-pointers from Konig and Brcaninovic of almost eight meters (24-18). Madelen Urieta’s team tried to stay on the scoreboard, although Bettencourt was again the main person responsible for keeping Jairista’s income up (28-23).
The defensive intensity continued to wreak havoc on the visitors when it came to finding the edge, coming onto a blank for a few minutes and creating the biggest difference yet, following another triple from Konig after a block (31 -2.3 ). Araski reacted and authorized a 0-7 run to get some air, but Konig, again outside the perimeter, responded in style. With 34-30 the teams went to the dressing rooms.
The second part started with a Hozono making his intention to leave clear on the scoreboard. With Bettencourt plugged in again, the ten-run difference was reached (45-35). Araski hesitated to let go, but two consecutive baskets were countered by a Contell joining the three-point game, continued by Tamara Seda, who let Jairis go eleven points and Fausto collapsed (50-39). There was no room for relaxation against an opponent determined to recover in time. The last part of the quarter ended up being a give and take, keeping the 10-point difference ahead of Alcantarilla’s (59-49).
The last quarter started with a somewhat more erratic Jairis, which the Basques took advantage of to narrow the gap slightly. However, Konig and Brcaninovic reappeared on the scene to show off their three-point power, regaining the 11-point lead (66-55) and once again causing a stir in a crowd that saw the eighth win come closer.
Araski kept trying, but the local players responded to each basket with a different one. Carlinhos Brown played and Fausto was a party. Jairis controlled the final bars and despite making up the difference in the closing seconds, victory was not in jeopardy. Finally, 78-74 and a crucial victory in the ambitions to keep the category.
