The Briton beats the Murcian in three sleeves and takes revenge for his defeat in the final in Buenos Aires
Carlos Alcaraz lost to Cameron Norrie in three sets (5-7, 6-4, 7-5) to give the Briton the crown he won last year in Rio de Janeiro. The Murcian was on track for the final until he suffered muscle problems in his right thigh. He took the first set smugly and handled the second set with authority, when he began to experience discomfort that prevented him from being explosive in the race. From there he had to bet on straight tennis, practically playing on the run and yet he managed to continue to compete and keep Norrie on the line at many points of the third round. But the effort eventually took its toll on the Spaniard, with limited mobility, and he had no choice but to bow to his opponent, whom he had just beaten in the Buenos Aires tournament.
Alcaraz had become Norrie’s black beast. He had beaten him in four of their five previous matches, including last Sunday’s final in Buenos Aires. It seemed that the Spaniard would continue to increase his profit statistics this Sunday, but that was not possible.
With the victory in Rio de Janeiro, Norrie takes a load off his shoulders and adds his first title so far this year, the fifth of his career. Alcaraz, for his part, recorded his first loss this season, after starting with eight wins in a row and the title last week in Buenos Aires.
Now we will have to be very attentive to Carlos Alcaraz’s medical report, although his presence in the Acapulco tournament next week seems complicated, especially given the major challenges he will face in March, with the Masters 1,000 of Indian Wells and Miami.
