The PGA is remodeling tournaments, with fewer players, no cut and more prizes

Date:

The PGA announced on Wednesday a format change from 2024with eight special tournaments open to a reduced number of players, between 70 and 78, with no cut and with a higher prize pool.

The eight special tournaments will be added to the ‘big’, ‘The Players’ and the three ‘Playoff’ events of the FedEx Cup, the PGA reported in a statement.

The format change “will change and mark the future path”, according to commissioner Jay Monahan, after the PGA board of directors approved this change on Tuesday night.

Among the main novelties, there is no cut after 36 holes, so the main players will compete in four days after their performance in the first two rounds. In addition, these tournaments will put FedExCup points at stake.

Monahan assured that this change will offer fans “unmissable contests” during the season. The PGA emphasized that the ‘big’, ‘The Players’ and the ‘Playoffs’ will not be affected by these changes and will retain the cut after 36 holes.

With these measures and a big increase in prize pools, the PGA aims to strengthen its movement in the face of the threat of LIV Golf, the new circuit launched last year and funded by the government of Saudi Arabia, which wants to compete the quality and prestige of the American body.
