Didier Drogba will not see his dream of leading the Ivory Coast Football Federation come true. The legendary scorer from Chelsea and Marseille stood up for the election in the body but this Saturday he was removed from the race by failing to pass the first round of the election.
Drogba fell behind his rivals, Idriss Diallo and Sory Diabaté, two local heavyweights in football. Diallo was ahead with 59 votes in the 130 cast ahead of Diabaté, who received 50 votes. Drogba finished third with just 21 votes.
Since there was no absolute majority, a second round had to be held between Idriss Diallo, the top FIF leader in the 2000s, and Sory Diabaté, another executive of the institution.
The blame on Drogba
With widespread support from the population and, according to some observers, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA, Drogba failed to convince the presidents of the Ivorian clubs that make up so many voters.
Drogba has been criticized in recent weeks for lacking in knowledge about local football and for not devoting himself fully to the election campaign.
