Los Angeles FC (LAFC) and LA GalaxyAfter their postponed match from the first day, they debuted this Saturday in the new season of MLS with mixed fortunes as Inter Miami and rookie St. Louis City their second win in two meetings.
Reigning MLS champions, Carlos Vela’s LAFC began their title defense with a 3-2 win against the Portland Timbers. Giorgio Chiellini, Kwadwo Opoku and Vela from a penalty made it 3-0 for the Angelenos but the Timbers put fear into the bodies of the locals -without actually tying the game- with two second half goals from Brazilian Evander and Paraguayan Christian Paredes.
LAFC was supposed to open the season last week with a tight Los Angeles derby against the Galaxy but rains in California forced that much-anticipated match to be postponed. In this way, the Galaxy also had to wait for the second day to debut in the 2023 MLS season but they did so with a heavy defeat to Dallas 3-1.
Without the injured Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández, the Galaxy took the lead with a goal from Dejan Joveljic but Dallas rallied with goals from Argentina’s Alan Velasco and a brace from Colombian-American Jesús Ferreira.
For its part, Inter Miami confirmed its good start to the season with its victory against the mighty Philadelphia Union (2-0), finalist of the MLS Cup in 2022. Jean Corentin and Robert Taylor, this one has a fantastic goal after taking control with his chest and sending a missile into the net without the ball falling, signing 6 out of 6 points for Phil Neville’s team.
The sweet surprise of MLS these two weeks is the St. Louis City, the new team in the league, seemed destined to end up in the last places of the classification but started in style with two wins in its first two matches. . Following an amazing 3-2 away win against Austin, one of the strongest teams in MLS, St. Louis City in their new Citypark stadium on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Charlotte.
Argentine Enzo Copetti took first in Charlotte but St. Louis City, driven by the great atmosphere in the stands, turned the game around. Brazilian João Klauss scored the third for the locals. After his disappointing debut against St. Louis City, Austin revived the day thanks to an agonizing 89th-minute goal by Argentine Maxi Urruti that allowed them to beat Montreal 1-0.
The heaviest result of the day was carried out by the New England Revolution with its 3-0 against the Houston Dynamo by Mexican Héctor Herrera, with 0 points and 5 goals agreed -and only one in favor- after two games . Colombian Dylan Borrero opened the New England festival with two wins in two days.
On the other hand, Argentine Thiago Almada’s Atlanta United salvaged a 1-1 home draw against Toronto thanks to Brazilian Matheus Rossetto’s goal that equalized Federico Bernardeschi’s opening goal for the Canadians.
Another notable name on the day was Argentine-Armenian Lucas Zelarayán, who came off a brace for Columbus Crew 2-0 against DC United.
Brazilian Héber scored again with the Sounders in his side’s 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake -the second victory for the Seattleites- and the San Jose Earthquakes beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1.
Finally, Chicago Fire and New York City signed a 1-1 draw (Brazilian Gabriel Pereira scored for the visitors) and three games ended in a goalless draw: New York Red Bulls-Nashville , Orlando City-Cincinnati and Colorado Rapids-Sporting Kansas City.
