UEFA to pay Liverpool fans

Date:

The UEFA will bring back fans of Liverpool who attended last year’s Champions League finals in Paris, European soccer’s governing body said Tuesday after an independent report found they were responsible for the riot outside the stadium.

The final was delayed for 36 minutes after thousands of Liverpool supporters were prevented from entering the Stade de France for the game on May 28, which Real Madrid won 1-0. French police were filmed using tear gas against fans, including women and children. Although UEFA initially blamed ‘red’ fans for the riot, the body had to apologize after the publication of an independent investigation.

We have considered a large number of views expressed both publicly and privately and believe we have produced a comprehensive and fair report.“, UEFA general secretary, Theodore Theodoridis, said in a statement.

We appreciate the input of Liverpool FC supporters organizations Spirit of Shankly (SOS) and Liverpool Disabled Supporters Association (LDSA) as well as open and transparent dialogue during this time. We recognize the negative experiences of those fans on the day and will compensate those who purchased tickets and were most affected by the difficulties accessing the stadium“.

UEFA says refunds will be available to all fans with tickets for gates A, B, C, X, Y and Z, where “the worst incidents have been reported”.
