It’s not official yet but it seems the decision has been made. The English tennis federation (LTA) will again allow Russian and Belarusian tennis players to participate in Wimbledon after last year’s veto, prompted by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Wimbledon said at the time that banning players from both countries was their only option under guidelines provided by the British government, a decision that drew the ire of the men’s (ATP) and women’s (WTA) circuits.
His answer was do not count points from British tournaments, including Wimbledonas well as imposing huge fines on LTA and AELTC.
Andy Murray, former world number one, slipped a few days ago that the Russians and Belarusians could play again at Wimbledonthat this year it will be played from July 3 to 16, and it doesn’t seem “crazy” for it to happen.
“It’s something very complicated and I’m sorry to the players who didn’t go there last yearbut I also understand what the situation is and why it is so difficult for Wimbledon to make a decision,” the Scotsman told Britain’s BBC.
“From what I understand, this year they’re going to let them play and I wouldn’t be crazy if they were.. If Wimbledon makes another decision, I can understand that too,” admitted the winner of three Grands.
Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam where competitors from Russia and Belarus were banned from participating last year.and players competed as individual athletes with no national affiliation in other majors.
Russian and Belarusian flags have been banned from Melbourne Park grounds at the Australian Open earlier this year following a complaint by the Ukrainian ambassador to the country.
Ukrainian player Elina Svitolina announced last month that the Wimbledon ban should continue.
Daniil Medvedev said he will respect whatever decision Wimbledon makes regarding the participation of players from the two countries.
Aryna Sabalenka echoed his words, saying that the decision was out of her control.
