The Chilean Cristian Garin won this Friday with authority over the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka and qualified for the third round of the Indian Wells Masters 1,000, where he will face the Norwegian Casper Ruud, third favorite, Argentine executioner Diego Schwartzman.
Garín, number 97 in the world ranking and coming from the ranking, defeated Nishioka, number 34 in the world, 6-4 and 6-0 in one hour and five minutes of play.
The 26-year-old Chilean reached the second round after defeating the Colombian in two sets Daniel Galan.
Now a rival of the highest difficulty awaits him in the third round, a Ruud who defeated Schwartzman 6-2 and 6-3, conceding and canceling a breaking ball.
The Norwegian was a finalist last year at the US Open, as well as in Miami, both losing Carlos Alcaraz.
Garín already knows what it’s like to beat Ruud and has a 2-1 record against the Norwegian, but he’s never beaten him on a hard surface.
His two victories came in 2019, in Houston and in Sao Paulo, on clay, while he fell in 2022 in the ATP Cup.
The Indian Wells tournament runs until April 19 with Alcaraz the early favorite and the Serbian’s notable absence. Novak Djokovic, for his refusal to be vaccinated against the coronavirus, and the Spanish Rafael Nadal sick leave due to injury.
