Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev, who has won three titles in an impressive start to 2023, defeated German Alexander Zverev on Tuesday and will face Spanish Alejandro Davidovich in the Indian Wells quarterfinals.
Medvedev won 6-7(5), 7-6(5) and 7-5 in a grueling match that lasted 3 hours and 17 minutes.
ANDNot only did he have to overcome a Russian in the first set against him but he also had to deal with a sprained ankle sustained in the second sett after a bad fall.
The tournament’s medical services worked on an apparently inflamed ankle and Medvedev returned to center court in Indian Wells to sign a great comeback against a hapless Zverev to close the ‘break’ (he only converted 2 of the 17 balls he had to break your opponent’s serve).
Seeded fifth from Indian Wells and the only one capable of defeating world number one Serbian Novak Djokovic so far this year, Medvedev has not lost a match in 2023 since losing in the third round of the Australian Open.
Thus, Medvedev won the tournaments in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai consecutively.
In the Indian Wells quarterfinals, he will face Davidovich, who defeated Chilean Cristian Garín 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday in one hour and 24 minutes.
Aside from his impressive return to Zverev on his ankle between the cotton balls, Medvedev again complained, as he has in recent days, on Tuesday about the Californian tournament court for its slowness.
“This court is a shame for tennis (…). And they call it a hard court? It’s a shame to call this terrible court a hard court,” he said after losing the first set.
In addition, he told the referee that he would walk to the bathroom as slowly as the track itself and assured that he did not care if they sanctioned him for it.
“If they allow us to play on such a court, I can afford to do whatever I want,” defended the tennis player, who continued his particular comedy ‘show’ shamelessly walking slowly to the bathroom.
