A referee turns to his mobile phone to check a goal during a second division match in Egypt, yesterday Friday. As the video-arbitration (VAR) system did not work in matches in the second division, Mohamed Faruk must use a spectator phone during the match between Suez and Al Nasr.
Al Nasr scored and celebrated, but the locals protested because of a handball and after a long time to review the video on the phone, the referee decided to cancel the goal. Fifteen minutes of injury time were added and Suez won 3-1.
The referee left the field of play with police protection, amid protests from Al Nasr’s players and technical staff, who threatened to take legal action against the referee for breaching the regulations.
