within change actions of the surroundings of the FC Barcelona facilities and of the development of actions related to Modification of the Metropolitan General Plan (MPGM), closely related to ‘Espai Barça‘, urbanization has been completed on Calle Menéndez y Pelayo, in the section between Avenida de Joan XXIII and Calle Martí i Franquès, as reported by the Barcelona club through its communication channels. This is one of the performances derived from the new area planning and the urbanization project.
They want to create a great open space around the Spotify Camp Nou, remove the outer fence and the unevenness that exists and repair and widen the surrounding streets to rearrange the vehicular and pedestrian access. In the reform of Menéndez y Pelayo, more than 22,000 m2 intervened, of which more than 4,000 are green areas. There will be one traffic lane in each direction and a service cord, and the sidewalks will be wide and will be an important novelty because, until a few months ago, they did not exist next to the cemetery.
In addition, it is placed new street furniture, 21 three-meter-long wooden benches and 16 60-centimeter wooden seats, in addition to a new lighting system that is better and more efficient than the current one. A total of 65 trees were also planted. Also, all horticultural work will be considered finished when ENDESA completes certain actions it carries out in the flower beds where these trees will be planted.
New bike lane
Besides, the bike path is getting longer through the avenue and up to Pius XII square, so the connection from Menéndez and Pelayo reaches the Diagonal. Adaptations were also made to the roundabout on Avenida Joan XXIII along Menéndez and Pelayo, with a new geometry that favors the circulation of vehicles, and a landscaped strip was completed next to the Masia.
The intervention in the street of Menéndez y Pelayo represents a further step in the development of the urban reordering of Spotify Camp Nou atmosphere and the implementation of Espai Barça, and adds to the redevelopment works already carried out on Avenida de Joan XXIII, between Calle de Menéndez y Pelayo and access 5 of the Spotify Camp Nou. In this sense, a total of more than 11 hectares of public space will be renovated, under the responsibility of the Club and in collaboration with the municipal technical teams, with the aim of creating a new quality citizen space, with more green spaces and new bike lanes.
Next steps
Regarding Avenida de Joan XXIII, the Club plans to start the second phase of works in the coming months and the range of action will be from access 5 of Spotify Camp Nou, until the roundabout that connects to Arístides Maillol street. In this way, the actions will focus on a new layout with wide sidewalks, reducing the road section, with a bike lane, and the road for three traffic lanes. It’s coming soon FC Barcelona will make the transfer to the Barcelona City Council for space on the sports equipment site at CEM Arístides Maillol. The restoration of the green slope bordering the Les Corts cemetery will act as a green background, improving the vegetation with the planting of pine trees and shrubs.
