The substance hexahydrocannabinol (HHC), which was mainly used by young people as a legal alternative to THC-containing cannabis, has been in fashion for several weeks. Now the permitted high is over for the time being: the Ministry of Health has included the active substance in the New Psychoactive Substances Regulation (NPS). It is forbidden to trade in this.
Like THC and CBD, HHC is also derived from the cannabis plant, but there is a lack of scientific data on the possible health consequences of consumption. For this reason, the production and trade of HHC, which is produced synthetically as a so-called pure substance, was banned. The new regulation comes into force on Thursday and, according to Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens), should apply “until we have sufficient knowledge of the health consequences”.
A ban is also expected in other countries
If HHC is extracted directly from the cannabis plant, it already falls under the Narcotics Act, the Ministry of Health says. In Finland, HHC has already been classified as a new psychoactive substance and this is expected soon in Belgium and Hungary. Other European countries are also discussing the future handling of synthetically manufactured HHC products.
