Carinthian customs officers on the Tauernautobahn took a beating against illegal cigarette smuggling. More than 100 packs of cigarettes have been seized from a Romanian bus.
The mobile control unit of the Carinthian Customs stopped a bus with a trailer with Romanian registration on the Tauernautobahn in July to check it – and the result is impressive.
Double floor in it
Next to the toilet facilities in the bus, 20 packs of cigarettes were hidden in black bags and behind empty jerry cans. “The second finding shows that the double-floor trick is not an obstacle for our customs officials,” the federal ministry said.
Intended for the Italian market
Another 86 packs of cigarettes were found in a secret hideout under the sleeping cabin, which was camouflaged by an artificial floor. The total of 21,200 cigarettes should have been transported to Italy via Austria.
“This attack shows us once again how important it is for our customs to be as mobile as the smugglers themselves. Our mobile control teams allow us to adapt precisely to these dynamic structures,” said Treasury Secretary Magnus Brunner. The cigarettes were seized and a criminal investigation was launched.
