Alonso: “We started well, but Red Bull are in a different league”

“The great circus of Formula One”book written by the journalist Nira Juancowith a preface by Fernando Alonso and epilogue of Carlos Sainz -who, to the former’s 32 premier class wins, added one for Spain last year- is presented this Wednesday in Madridin an action led by his colleague (and former boss) Antonio Lobato and in which the double Asturian world champion, a personal friend of the author, participated via videoconference.

The media communicator from the Canary Islands, one of the most well-known and experienced journalists in the ‘paddock’, immerses himself completely in a busy time of F1 to say, from the bowels of this “great circus”, the details and unknown stories that have formed around the great milestones of this moment: from Alonso’s arrival at Ferrari to the first Spanish team in Formula One, Hispania -whose owner, José Ramón Carabante, and his son José were also present at the event-; passed the sadly missing María de Villota and two other pilots, Jaime Alguersuari and Pedro De la Rosa -current ambassadors of Aston Martin, Alonso’s new team-, who also sent congratulatory videos.

If the image of Lobato is associated with Spain in the television broadcasts of F1, in the female sphere the main link between the viewer and the races is, without a doubt -and especially during the six years that he traveled to all of world circuits-, Nira Juanco ( Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1978), graduated in law from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and in journalism from the Carlos III University of Madrid. His professional career – in which, apart from his knowledge and mastery of the medium, he has always stood out for his friendliness and naturalness- has always been linked to the world of television; and currently holds the position of deputy director of Dazn.

The work, published by the publishing house of ‘The Sphere of Books’ consists of eight blocks: four of them are centered in Alonso, one in Alguersuari, one in Hispania and the other two in Pedro de la Rosa and María de Villota. In the book there are also notable mentions of other pilots, such as the Spanish Marc Gené, Dani Juncadella and Roberto Merhi; and Australian Daniel Ricciardo.

“On March 20, 2009, my dream came true, my big dream. He was on a circuit for the first time to cover a Formula 1 Grand Prix and it wasn’t just any track. That was Albert Park, in Melbourne, on the other side of the world. That’s not all. He has six great years ahead of him where he will live in the golden age of Spanish motorsport with Fernando Alonso at Ferrari; with up to three Spanish pilots on the starting grid of a grand prix; with the first Spanish F1 team to compete in a full championship season, Hispania Racing Team, renamed HRT Formula 1 Team in 2012; in the celebration of two great prizes in the territory of Spain, in Barcelona and Valencia; with up to six Spanish test riders in the paddock; with four televisions from our country covering the World Cup (one national and three regional)… In short, a dream come true”, commented Juanco in a presentation that he did not want to miss, even from a distance, Alonso.

Alonso, who, at the age of 41, has had an impeccable start to the season, with two podium finishes in his first two races with Aston Martin (in Bahrain and in Saudi Arabia) commented, in a humorous tone, the first moments in which he coincides. with the Canarian journalist, with whom, after some tensions at the beginning of their professional relationship, ended up building a friendship that still lasts, as revealed this Wednesday.

“I want to go back to Spain and, from what they told me, I know there are good expectations being built”, commented Alonso, when, when asked by the author and by Lobato, he referred to his youngest (and newest) followers, some of whom were not even born when he started winning races and carving out a unique record in F1. “Yes, this new generation that did not see 2005 and 2006 (the years in which they won their two World Cups) is a bit surprising, but they hope; and they believe in victory or in a fight for the World Cup is a bit exaggerated.”, he pointed out.

“We started well, but Red Bull is in a different league. So you have to keep your feet on the ground,” said Alonso during the presentation of ‘The Great Formula One Circus’, by Nira Juanco.
