The Key to the Portimao Sprint Race

Date:

1. Márquez’s unshakable winning character.

Marc landed an unexpected third place throughout the day. He got into Q2 after breaking the circuit record; in Q2 he took pole position and in the race he took advantage of Oliveira’s mistake in the last lap to climb to the podium; amazing.

2. Jorge Martín’s mistake on the last lap.

His characteristic burst made him the favorite at the premiere of the ‘sprint’ format. He started the final lap in the lead, but a slight mistake at turn #5 meant the victory was gone. But the format certainly fits it like a glove.

3. The “fratricidal” moment between Aleix Espargaró and Maverick Viñales.

The two Aprilia riders recovered from poor starts and reached the leading group, but a one-on-one between the two as Viñales tried to pass Espargaró cost them everything they had gained.

4. Miguel Oliveira and environmental pressure.

Much to the dismay of the Portuguese pilot and his dedicated Portuguese fans. Until the final braking of turn #1 he chose the podium, but in the one-on-one with Jack Miller both widened; finished the race in fifth.

5. The hyperaggressiveness of the race.

“If the World Cup organizer was looking for intensity with the ‘sprint’ format, he hit the nail on the head”, commented Aleix Espargaró as a result of the aggressiveness shown by some riders throughout the weekend.
