Carlos Alcaraz delivered the Miami Masters 1000 ATP champion crown and number one in the ATP world ranking by defeating the Italian Jannik Sinner by 6-7 (4), 6-4 and 6-2 in a great three-hour game, as competitive as it was dramatic in its resolution.
The 19-year-old Spaniard suffered cramps at the start of the third set, after stopping the match for ten minutes while he himself went to the locker room to go to the bathroom and change his clothes, according to regulations.
That pause didn’t turn out well for him, though he was coming home with titles of Indian Wells and Buenos Aires, with much more to do with European clay. Anger is not removed by anyone, but he is relativizing it as he has regained his spirit, the competitive enthusiasm cooled.
“Cramps didn’t defeat me”
“I went to the bathroom and had a slump. I stopped. And I started having cramps. It was a very tough match physically. Even though it wasn’t the reason why I lost the match. It happened in the first game of the third set, but later I came back to feel better”, explained the tennis player from El Palmar.
The anger after defeat
“After the game, about 15, 25 minutes, I can’t talk to anyone. I’m complaining, everything is like crap to me (laughs because it’s hard for him to find the expression in English). But when that time passes I start think about the positive things, the game, the season, the tournament, talking about it with my team, with my family. And here I am (in front of the press) smiling. It lasts me 20, 25 minutes “.
The world number one is missing
“It’s losing a semifinal. You don’t think about number one or the Sunshine Double (winning Indian Wells and Miami back to back). I don’t think about that. It’s a shame but what I have to think about is how to improve to win Jannik. For The important for me is losing in the semifinal of a tournament”.
