Max Verstappen is completely against F1’s plans for sprint racing and to conduct a new experiment, with another change to the sprint racing weekend format at the next Formula 1 event, the GP. of Azerbaijan from F1 2023.
“I don’t think it’s in F1’s DNA to do this kind of sprint racing. F1 is about getting the most out of qualifying and then having a fantastic Sunday.”commented the head of the contest. “That’s the DNA of the sport and I don’t understand why we should change”.
“When we do all kinds of things, the weekend becomes more intense and we do a lot of racing. I don’t think that’s the right way to do it.” he said, highlighting the increase in appointments F1 has experienced in recent years, reaching 23 races this year.
Max’s proposal
“I understand that they want every day to be exciting, but I think it’s better to just cut the weekend: just racing, Saturday (qualifying) and Sunday and make those two days exciting.”said Verstappen as a solution to F1’s search for more excitement on all Grand Prix days, a proposal that would mean a lower load of GP days for drivers in a calendar with more appointments.
“Because we’re heading into times where you’re going to have 24 or 25 races, if you start adding more things, it’s not worth it to me. I don’t enjoy that”he said of a calendar full of competition.
“For me, a sprint race is about survival, not about competing”he insisted. “When you have a fast car, there is nothing to risk (in sprint racing) and I prefer to keep my car alive and make sure you have a good race car for Sunday.”finished
