Paula Badosa qualified this Thursday for the quarterfinals of WTA 500 of Charleston (USA) after winning in two sets, by 6-1 and 6-3, over Russian Diana Shnaider. The Catalan will face the winner of the match between American Jessica Pegula, number 3 in the world ranking, and Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu (37).
This is the third time in a row that Badosa, who in the two previous rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday defeated Egyptian Mayar Sherif and Canadian Leylah Fernandez, has reached the quarterfinals in Charleston.
Paula, 25 years old, number 33 in the world and seeded 12th, started the match with a big dose of aggression that allowed her to break Shnaider’s serve in the first game. The Spaniard repeated the break in the third and seventh games, and easily won the first set 6-1.
In the second set, the Russian, ranked 95 in the world, with discomfort in his left arm, had to seek medical help at the start of the fourth game when the score was 2-1 for Badosa. After receiving treatment, and with his arm bandaged, Shnaider held his serve and in the fifth game he came within a point of breaking the Spaniard’s serve.
But Badosa recovered and in the eighth he broke Shnaider’s serve making it 5-3 on the scoreboard. In the final game, Badosa showed her class by ending a prolonged exchange of blows with a drop shot from the back of the court that Shnaider couldn’t reach.
