The Spanish Tennis Team did the first press conference before the qualifying round of the Billie Jean King Cup 2023 that will take place against Mexico This Friday 14th and Saturday 15th April at the Puente Romano Tennis Club in Marbella.
The Spanish captain Anabel Medina is happy to compete again in Spain: “We are excited because we have been playing abroad for three years and having a tie at home, surrounded by a public that will support us and cheer us on in difficult moments is an added motivation.”
Regarding the first training sessions, he commented that “the girls are adapting to playing on the ground again, outside, in the heat…. But I look forward to themvery motivated and very good at training.”
Medina considers Mexico a very competitive team. “We will be looking for some very good players on the track and wants to compete at every point. They are very solid, with a very Spanish style. Some of them have already been formed in Spain. There will be five very competitive points, with a lot of rallying and they will force us to play very concentrated from the start and one hundred percent in every point.”
For its part, Granada Nuria Parrizaswho will debut as the team’s number one in this tie, said that “I honestly don’t care if I play one or two, or if I don’t play at all. I love being in this tie and the times i play i feel very good. All I know is that I will give it my all on the track.”
The second Rebeka Masárová, wants to establish herself as a good player on the ground as well: “I had pretty good results on clay, like my junior title at Roland Garros. It’s always a bit difficult to adapt, but I’ve been training on gravel for a few weeks and here the slopes are impeccable.”
Sara Sorribes returns to the team after her long-awaited return to competition in the week after six months away from the slopes due to injury: “I’m happy to be competing again and here. It’s been a week that made me happy and it’s finally here.
The woman from Castellón assured that: “My feeling in Colombia is good, I know that I am training wellbut to be able to confirm it there and enjoy the competition again, having a good time again on a tennis court is something I really want.
The team’s rookie is Marina Bassols, who was in the Glasgow Finals last year as a reserve.: “I am very excited to join the team. The important thing is that we are all super well and the captain helps us a lot. I’m already looking forward to Friday, I’ll give it my all in training and hopefully I’ll play.”
Aliona Bolsova, settled in the team’s final doubles, believe the heat expected in Marbella will not affect them: “We didn’t step in the winter because we came from playing in Australia in the summer and we don’t come from the heat, both us and the Mexicans”.
