The Formula One commissioners rejected a Ferrari request of check Carlos Sainz’s penalty which left the team with no points in the Australian Grand Prix.
The stewards who made the original decision in Melbourne held a virtual meeting on Tuesday to decide whether to review the five-second penalty that dropped Sainz from fourth to 12th. For that to happen, according to the rules, Ferrari needs to show the audience a “meaningful and relevant new element”.
Stewards ruled that Ferrari, which provided telemetry and witness statements from Sainz and other drivers, did not do so. “There is no significant and relevant new element that was not available to the parties requesting review at the time of the decision in question. Therefore, the request is dismissed”they said in a statement.
Sainz was deemed “totally at fault” in a collision with Fernando Alonso, who finished third, on the last restart. The penalty meant Ferrari went blank in the third race of the season after Charles Leclerc retired on the first lap.
