The family of Michael Schumacher will opt for criminal proceedings to act against the magazine “Die Aktuelle” for publishing an alleged interview with the seven-time Formula 1 world champion with responses generated by an artificial intelligence system.
Family representatives have informed several German media outlets that they will file a lawsuit against the publication after the interview sparked outrage among followers of the former pilot who suffered a serious skiing accident in 2013 and has not appeared in public since.
“Michael Schumacher. The first interview. A global sensation“, says the magazine on the cover with a picture of a large portrait of the former pilot.
In a smaller text it says it “looks deceptively real” and within the publication it is indicated that the interview was conducted through an artificial intelligence program.
That hint is easy for the reader of the interview to miss is titled “My life has completely changed.”
In the text, on double pages, without the signature of any editor, it is not specified at any time that it is a simulation. A “sounds deceptively real” seems alert, but in a timid way. The possibility that this is really not an interview and it is all the work of Artificial Intelligence only slips away when the following is read at the end of the article: “Michael Schumacher really said all this? The interview is online. On a page dealing with artificial intelligence, or AI for short.”
To create this text, the German medium used the application “character.ai”, which allows you to speak in imitation of famous peopleanswering questions in the way that the Artificial Intelligence considers that the character in question will speak using information from the previous statements of these personalities.
“No rambling, vague half-sentences from friends. Your answers! By Michael Schumacher! Here it is: the amazing interview! With redemptive answers to the most burning questions everyone has been asking for a long time,” the magazine said.
“How have you been since your accident in 2013?” or “How are you now?“, are some of the questions that this publication asks in the text, even asking the supposed interviewee if he follows the career of his son Mick.
“My life has completely changed“, this publication stands out on its double page, between quotation marks, as if the phrase was uttered by Michael Schumacher. Germany exploded on social networks against the said publication.
Another controversy in 2014 with ‘Schumi’
This same magazine has already starred in another scandal with another cover story that has angered F1 fans in Germany. It was in 2014. On that cover they used an image of Michael Schumacher from the past, with the following headline: “lucky! sitting in the sun“.
To illustrate that photo, the magazine used a photo of Michael Schumacher that led the reader to believe it was taken during his recovery process. AND Inside the magazine, in the text, the publication explains that Michael needs a wheelchair and was “pushed onto the terrace by his wife Corinna. on clear summer days.” But actually, the photo they used was a snapshot from the past taken in Saint-Moritz, Switzerland, a year before Michael’s accident.
In these more than 6 years, many rumors appeared in the international press about Michael’s true state. In 2019, the ‘Daily Mail’ pointed out that the seven-time world champion was possibly not in bed, and was not necessarily connected to a medical device that would keep him alive.. But the family had no reaction to such information. Yes, he did it years ago, filing a lawsuit against the German magazine ‘Bunte’ after giving false hope about Michael’s recovery with information they considered false.
It should also be remembered that shortly after Schumacher’s accident, A journalist has been accused of posing as a priest to try to sneak into his hospital room. In addition, in 2016, ‘RTL’ reported that the police, together with the police, were investigating the alleged attempt to sell a photograph of Schumacher at his house in Geneva, the value of which was thought to reach one million euros.
