Talor Gooch saw his double-digit lead all but evaporate, but recovered in the final minute to win the inaugural LIV Australia tournament this Sunday at Grange Golf Club.
After two rounds of 10-under with no bogeys, Gooch went +1 for his first LIV Golf tournament win. with a three stroke advantage over an Anirban Lahiri throughout the progress.
As the tournament leader, the 31-year-old American started his round on Sunday’s first hole in shotgun tee format and birdied the par-3 fifth hole, but his bogey-free streak ended at the par-5 seventh hole .
He missed a shot at the eighth and his slump worsened with a double-bogey at the tenth., cutting his lead over a fast-moving Lahiri to just two strokes with eight holes to play. Gooch rallied with birdies on the 11th and 13th, and made par on the par-4 18th for the win and $4 million of the $20 million purse.
Lahiri shot 65 to finish second at 16-under, two shots out of a four-way tie for third with Cameron Tringale (67), Pat Perez (67), Patrick Reed (65) and the British Open champion Cam Smith. (66) , they all had 15 under par and 201 shots.
Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson finished at -12 in a tie for 11th place. As in the first two rounds, Mickelson was the clear crowd favorite and he was cheered for most of his run by another 35,000 sell-out crowd on a hot day at Adelaide’s Grange Golf Club.
Chase Koepka certainly hit the shot of the day with an ace on the 12th hole, which is celebrated in style by several thousand fans who line up at the so-called “watering hole”.
Play was delayed for several minutes as stewards cleared the tee area of hundreds of plastic cups and bottles thrown by fans, in an unusual scene in golf. Koepka posted a final round of six under par and 66 shots, and a total of 10 under par.
More than 90,000 fans attended the three-day event, making it the most successful edition of the LIV Golf tournaments, now in its second year. The 14-event season continues next weekend at Singapore’s Sentosa Golf Club.
