American Tori Bowie, three-time Olympic medalist in Rio 2016, has died at the age of 32, her representative office reports. “We are devastated to share the very sad news that Tori Bowie has passed away. We have lost a client, dear friend, daughter and sister. Tori was a champion…a beacon of light that shone so brightly! We are truly heartbroken and our prayers are with family and friends,” the statement read, which did not specify the causes of his death. She was found dead in Florida on Tuesday, according to TMZ’s website. The North American won silver in the 100 meters, bronze in the 200 meters and gold in the 4×100 relay in Brazil. She was also double world champion in London 2017 in 100 and 4×100, and bronze in 100 in Beijing 2015, among other achievements. In fact, Bowie is the last major US champion in the 100 meters, with her gold at the 2017 World Championships. Since then, Jamaica’s dominance has been overwhelming, sweeping the podiums of games and world championships. In that final in London, Bowie won with a mark of 10.85, one hundredth less than Marie-Josée Ta Lou. Bowie thus became the heiress of Carmelita Jetter, gold at the 2011 World Championships in the heterometer. His best numbers date from 2014 (6.95 in height), 2016 (10.78 in 100) and 2017 (21.77 in 200). His last major competition was the Doha World Cup, in which he finished fourth in height with a best jump of 6.81 (-0.4). In the 100 metres, a class in which he defended the title he won two years ago in the British capital, he did not get beyond a semi-final that he did not even play. Some sources indicate that he suffered from severe depression and that this had kept him off the slopes. In fact, Bowie hadn’t competed since June 4, 2022, when she placed fifth in the 200 in a meeting in Florida by a discrete mark (23.60). A year earlier he had not even participated in the tests for the Tokyo Games.
