The American Shakur Stevenson won this Saturday by unanimous decision over the Mexican Oscar Valdes and, in addition to removing the undefeated poster, he kidnapped the World Boxing Council super featherweight world title.
At the Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Stevenson gave a boxing lesson from long distance and prevailed using cardboard in favor of 117-110, 118-109, 118-109, to reach 18 wins unbeaten, nine of them in by KO, while Valdés suffered his first loss after 30 wins, 23 on the fast track.
Stevenson, with more reach and stronger, scored with the right ‘jab’ from long distance against the Mexican, with little space for response.
The American continued the initiative and although Valdez landed some good right hands and hit the stomach, the American again took the lead in the second segment.
Óscar Valdez reacted in the third round. He went central distance, made impacts with his straight shot, moved better and approached the judges ’scorecards.
Skakur returned to the fight and dictated the rules in the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds, the latter with a number of protections.
In those three rounds Stevenson insisted on the jab and since then, he has done damage through punches to the stomach, effective straight and more punches against the Mexican, with his guard closed.
In the sixth Valdez was thrown off balance and taken advantage of by the American, causing Valdez to be counted for protection. Although it was Stevenson’s best attack, it benefited the judge, who didn’t need it for some low punch.
With an advantage on the cards, Shakur followed the script from a long distance, though Óscar responded and the second time he became competitive, which he repeated in the eighth, where the Mexican struck the balance.
Stevenson hit again from behind with his jab and in the middle of the ninth round he launched a nice upper cut, which he completed with punches below to confirm the advantage.
He will return to retrieve the belt
Forced to impress the judges, Oscar forced the action, but after a good start in the tenth round, Stevenson made him fail and punished the desperate Mexican with combinations.
Stevenson confirmed superiority at a festival of straights in Mexican anatomy; he was better on the eleventh, he danced on the twelfth and thus confirmed a comfortable victory.
“This win means everything, Oscar is a tough champion, but I want all the belts,” said Stevenson, who proposed to his girlfriend, Young Lyric, who said yes.
Valdés said he will strive to be world champion again and recognizes Shakur’s quality.
“He’s better tonight, he’s big, he has speed and a good defense, but I’ll be back to get the belt back for Mexico,” he said.
