The doubling of the import duties announced by US President Donald Trump from 25 to 50 percent to steel and aluminum entered into force at midnight (local time; 6.01 hours CEST).
According to Trump, according to his own statements, it wants to correct trade weights and strengthen the domestic industry. Steel and aluminum import from Great Britain are excluded, for which a meaning of 25 percent continues to apply. The background is a trading pact that the United States have closed with the British.
Economists expect noticeable effects for consumers – for example when buying cars, kitchen appliances or canned goods.
So far it is unclear how the EU will react. The EU committee had sharply criticized Trump’s announcement during the weekend and endangered a response before the summer. As an insult, the procedure is mainly assessed because of the recently intensified negotiations for the trade conflict regulation.
Possible at rates
If Trump stays at the double rates, the EU could impose the rates in the short term. The Member States had already cleared the road in April. American products such as jeans, motorcycles, beef or citrus fruits can, among other things, make extra loads. Measures on industrial and agricultural goods such as cars, sweet potatoes and whiskey are also considered.
