Historical Ancelotti

Italian Carlo Ancelotti, coach of Real Madrid, is the first coach in history to lead to four Champions League finals.

With the Whites ’victory against Manchester City, the Reggiolo coach was on the bench for the fifth time in a final of continental competition.

He has been with Milan in 2003, 2005 and 2007, and with Real Madrid in 2014. The Italian left behind his compatriot Marcello Lippi (Juventus 1996, 1997, 1998, 2003), Scotsman Sir Alex Ferguson (Manchester United 1999, 2000). 2009, 2011) and the Spanish Miguel Muñoz (Real Madrid 1960, 1962, 1964, 1966).

Ancelotti, who is also the first coach to win a title in five major leagues, will have the chance in Paris to become the most successful coach.

So far, thanks to victories at Milan in 2003 (against Juventus, 0-0, 3-2 penalties) and 2007 (2-1 against Liverpool) and at Real Madrid in 2014 (against Atlético de Madrid, 4-1 after extra time), he tied for three titles with legendary Bob Paisley, who crowned Liverpool in 1977, 1978 and 1981; and with Frenchman Zinedine Zidane, who won three consecutive titles at the helm of the white team, between 2016 and 2018, and was his assistant for the last eight years ago in Lisbon against Atlético de Madrid.

Thanks to these titles, he is the manager who has won the most finals with more than one team, with more than Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburg 1983), Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid 1998, Bayern Munich 2013), Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001) and José Mourinho (Porto 2004, Inter 2010).

As a player he won two European Cup titles with the Milan team led by Arrigo Sacchi. In 1989 they beat Steaua Bucharest (4-0) in Barcelona in the final and in 1990 Benfica (1-0) in Vienna.

In the achievements section that combines both aspects, players and coaches, he is currently tied at five with Miguel Muñoz, who added three to his titles as a coach as a Real Madrid footballer (1956, 1957 at 1958).
