The putt and a double bogey send Scheffler reeling as Rahm still picks No. 1

Date:

scottie scheffler will have to wear overalls to work this Sunday on the last day of Byron Nelson Classic which was played near where he was born, in TPC Craig Ranch, in McKinney, Texas, if he wants to have any chance of winning the tournament and reclaiming the world number 1 by ousting Jon Rahm from the reigns. It’s all up to you, but this Saturday he wasted a great opportunity to get on the scoreboard.

The American, world number 2, and leading for much of the third day, made a double bogey on the 18th hole to finish at par (71) for the day and 199 strokes overall (-14), two back of the leading trio. A ball hit into a bunker, and another rather unlucky day with a putt, deprived Scheffler of sleep as the singles leader.

Scheffler, 26, is looking for his seventh PGA Tour victory – all since February last year – and this week he will once again be a strong candidate for a second ‘major’, the PGA Championship at Oak Hill.

Swede Vincent Norrman shot a 65 and is at 14 under with Scheffler, Jason Day (66) and Si Woo Kim (68). There are 25 players within five strokes of the lead. Englishman Tyrrell Hatton, 17th in the world ranking, the second best-ranked player in the field behind Scheffler, carded a 65 and is at -13 with Patton Kizzire (64).

Scheffler could have taken a two-shot lead at the par-4 12th, but missed a short birdie putt on the course’s second-toughest hole. He squandered two more decent birdie chances on the back nine before trouble on the 18th, when he also missed the green with an easy approach shot after playing from the bunker.

Classification (par 71):

197 Ryan Palmer (USA) -16 (64-65-68)

Austin Eckroat (USA) -16 (69-65-63)

Zecheng Dou (CHN-16 (63-70-64)
