In the night from Sunday to Sunday, sirens blared throughout Ukraine: several strategic bombers of the Russian Air Force are said to have launched missiles from the Caspian Sea region. Ternopil, the birthplace of the Ukrainian ESC participant Tvorchi, was attacked by Russia on Saturday evening during the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC).
It should be a fun, exciting evening at the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool. But it turned out differently. Shortly before the appearance of Ukrainian ESC participant Tvorchi, explosions from Russian missiles shook the western Ukrainian city of Ternopil, regional council chairman Mykhailo Holovko said.
Authorities called on residents to go to shelters. Two people were injured in the attack, Ukrainian authorities said on Telegram.
As the Kiev military administration announced on Sunday morning, all Russian drones heading for the capital were shot down. The reconnaissance drones were most likely sent to determine the position of the air defense positions in Kiev, says chief executive Serhiy Popko. No cruise missiles were detected.
Selensky in Berlin
The air raid siren was activated parallel to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Germany. Selenskyj announced shortly after midnight (CEST) that he had already arrived in Berlin. After the US, Germany is Kiev’s biggest military supporter.
Only on Saturday did the German Ministry of Defense announce another large support package. For Selenskyj it is the first visit to Germany since the start of the war 14 months ago. Recently, the Ukrainian army has been able to intercept a large proportion of Russian missiles and drones using anti-aircraft technology supplied mainly from Germany.
