Cardiff City has taken Nantes to the French courts to get more than 100 million euros in compensation in the long-running dispute between the two clubs since the death of Argentine forward Emiliano Sala in a minor plane accident that occurred on January 21, 2019.
Nantes have reached an agreement for the transfer of Sala to Cardiff for €18 million but the player lost his life hours later as he was traveling to the Welsh city to join his new team when the plane crashed in the English Channel.
Cardiff appealed last week to the Nantes Commercial Court for damages and claimed Nantes “more than 100 million euros”, as confirmed Jérôme Marsaudon and Louis-Marie Absil, the lawyers of the French club, confirms information published by L’Équipe. The case will be judged on June 22.
“After a strong rejection by FIFA, the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) and the Swiss Federal Court, Cardiff has opened an absurd new legal front,” Nantes’ lawyers told Agence France Press.

“Nothing serious. Cardiff assessed their alleged damages at 17 million euros and their claim was completely dismissed. Today, before the Commercial Court of Nantes, it is considered that these same damages worth more than 100 million euros!”, the lawyers continued to be surprised.
“We have great confidence in the analysis that the Commercial Court of Nantes will make of these excessive demands. Nantes will not fail to claim compensation for the damages caused by these abusive methods within more in four years,” added the lawyers, protesting. “another display of Cardiff’s incomprehensible brutality”.
Other requests in Cardiff
According to L’Equipe, Cardiff is also asking for an additional 10 million euros corresponding to “the return of the first payment with interest” for the transfer of Emiliano Sala, “which Cardiff has already ordered to be arranged.”
Cardiff City is also asking that Nantes be ordered to pay two million euros for “reputational damage suffered” as a result of this dispute.
