Four more Soudal Quick-Step riders, Jan Hirt, Josef Cerny, Louis Vervaeke and Mattia Cattaneo withdrew from the Giro d’Italia on Wednesday after testing positive for Covid-19as announced by the team.
“Following Remco Evenepoel’s positive test on Sunday, a new round of tests was conducted on cyclists and staff. who stayed in Italy, and unfortunately Jan Hirt, Josef Cerny, Ouis Vervaeke and Mattia Cattaneo cannot continue,” said a statement from the Belgian team.
The team doctor, Toon Cruyt, explained the latest events after the abandonment of the leader, Remco Evenepoel.
“After the Remco positive on Sunday night, we had two more runners who were not feeling well on Monday morning but tested negative for antigens.. Therefore, a PCR test was performed on the remaining seven runners, the results of which showed that all four boys tested positive. We will continue to monitor and implement our testing protocol on the three runners and staff who remain at the race,” he said.
