The British Geraint Thomas (Ineos), pink jersey of the Giro d’Italia, lamented the fall and retirement of his teammate Tao Geoghegan, who was in third place in the general classification. In fact, the first three in the classification fell on the same curve, but the worst unemployed and ended up being evacuated by ambulance was the Londoner.
“As usual, we were jockeying for position when a UAE rider fell next to me. Tao and I were practically in the same place. Unfortunately he is badly injured,” explained the leader of the Giro.
Thomas underlined the importance of losing a rider like Tao, winner of the 2020 Giro and in a position to fight for the pink jersey in this edition.
“Obviously it’s a big loss. He was doing really well. He was in a really great position and it’s very sad to lose him like this,” he stressed.
