Fernando Alonso opened in an interview with ‘The New York Times’. In it, he showed his most personal side. He specified how he reached an agreement to be signed Aston Martin and the plans he still has to fulfill, both on the track and, especially, off it.
Fernando Alonso is a driver who lives for and for F1. His life revolves entirely around that one axis. If he does something, he does it all, 120%. And in F1, that’s what he does. An example of this is his winter preparation, completely focused for months on reaching his peak at the beginning of the season, without distractions: just training, training and training. And he achieved his goal. He started the course physically like a bull, better than ever at the age of 41.
And when not racing, it is common to see him not only physically training every day, but also visiting his Museum Circuit in Oviedo to drive his kart. How many times did he repeat it, what he likes the most is driving and if it’s up to him he will race every Sunday.
Fernando Alonso is focused on his dreams on the track, leaving what he referred to in this interview as “the dream of my life” for another time. He is that candid about what he wants to do when he leaves F1.
“I want to have a family. It’s my biggest dream in life. I haven’t succeeded in that because of the way I live. That’s something where, when I stop competing, I’ll find my happiness.”, he commented, in relation to the future as a father. Before, all he could think about was continuing to shine on the track. His goal on the asphalt is to become a champion again. Or at least, aspire to it in the coming years with Aston Martin’s ambitious project. And beyond titles, he wants to leave a valuable legacy.
“If I win another title…”
“Winning a championship would be perfect. If I win another title, in all the years since the last one (He was champion in 2005 and 2006)… it’s going to be unprecedented, that kind of distance between two championships. That’s my goal now.”Fernando argued. “Or the legacy I want to leave in this sport, of someone who loves it so much that I continue to compete for many years, keeping the level as high as possible. That will prove a point, something that is part of my comeback.”
In this sense, ‘The New York Times’ collects some statements from the owner of Aston Martin that highlight the fighting and winning spirit that the native of Oviedo brought to the team:
“These guys are gladiators. The way he keeps himself physically and mentally and his motivation levels are higher than ever. He’s determined to win. This guy is a big ball of motivation. He takes everyone, saying ‘Come on, we’re going to win,'” commented Lawrence Stroll to Fernando.
“Maybe when I leave here I will be linked to the team”
“I am aware of my age. I know I’m not here for the next 10 years, or whatever, so maybe when I stop racing, I’ll be linked to the team somehow.”, pointed to a future off the track, with a position within the Aston Martin team. And as he said before, if the native of Oviedo fails to win a title, he will be happy to know that he laid the foundation for another driver like Lance to win a title for the green box.
He did not specify the Dakar, something that will clearly be one of his goals after the years he decided to continue in Formula 1. He knows that he has all the time in the world for that and when he returns to the desert he can do it with a chance to win. In fact, Toyota is waiting for you.
