Julen Lopetegui arrived at Wolverhampton in November, when they were in the relegation zone, and they had three Premier League games left to secure permanence. He has a contract until 2025 but his continuation is in doubt due to the financial problems the club is going through.
Certainly two weeks ago, after achieving permanence, Lopetegui publicly called for a “long meeting” with Wolves president Jeff Shi, and he responded with this message: “In football you have to increase your performance, your squad, this happens through investment. If you don’t do it, all the other teams in the Premier League will.”
As Spanish journalist Guillem Balagué revealed to the BBC, Lopetegui was aware in the aforementioned meeting with Shi of Wolves’ problems in complying with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.
“If the club can’t get the signings or investment they promised and, on the contrary, they have to sell to respect FFP, their future is in doubt even if they have a contract.” said Balagué.
The talks Lopetegui will hold with Wolves will give a clearer idea of whether the Basque coach will continue on the bench at the Molineux Stadium.
