DeChambeau, from protein shakes to 350-yard drives

Date:

He former 2020 US Open Champion Bryson DeChambeauone of 18 players currently enrolled in the LIV Golf which is among 156 players playing the PGAcarded a four-under par (66) to advance Scottie Scheffler and Canadian Corey Conners to first day of this ‘big’ happening at Oak Hill CC.

DeChambeau, who missed last year’s PGA Championship because he was recovering from surgery on his left hand, began the round on the back nine and reached the halfway mark at 1-under. From there he made no more bogeys and added three birdies. At Winged Foot DeChambeau won the US Open by six strokes and here at Oak Hill he took the lead in the first exchange.

It’s funny because this Bryson DeChambeau doesn’t have much physical to do with the one from three years ago. That week he was at the height of his revolution. The mad scientist, a physicist by training, pushed his body to the limit to hit it harder than anyone else in the world, to defy the most traditional laws of the swing. He figured out the speed of the ball and won Winged Foot with a cap.

DeChambeau is physically no longer that player. A long time ago he started a process to deflate and started eating healthier. No more protein shakes. He kept hitting it for a very long time, a little less, but very long. Of course, longer than everyone else, like on this first day of the PGA Championship, which averaged almost 350 yards off the tee. If he’s on top of that in the irons, he looks set to sign off with an extraordinary 66, his best start to a Grand Slam since the 2019 Masters.
