The money distributed by Roland Garros 2023: you don’t have to win games to be a millionaire

Date:

This Sunday the new edition of Roland Garros starts marked by the loss of Rafa Nadal and there are two favorites above the rest: Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.

The Spaniards and the Serbians have the most options to lift the champion’s trophy, though only one of them will be in the grand finale on Sunday, June 11 after they were both in the upper part of the table in the draw held on Thursday.

Alcaraz is seeking his first title in Paris, as the Serbian chases the goal of breaking the 22 Grand Slams tie he holds with Nadal. In addition, the title would give either of them ATP number 1 and a juicy economic prize.

And it was that the winners of this edition (male and female earners) will pocket 2.3 million euros each100,000 euros more than last year after a 12.3% increase in prizes experienced by the tournament in 2023, which continues to distribute 49.6 million euros to tennis players, 12.3% more.

The finalists will pocket half of that prize, 1.65 million, while for reaching the semifinals the prize is 630,000 euros, 30,000 more than in 2022. The quarters are paid 400,000 euros and the eighth with 240,000, in both cases 20,000 euros more than the last edition.

But the gains were significant even among those eliminated in the first rounds. Just for participating, tennis players will take 69,000 euros, which will be 97,000 if they win the first match and 142,000 and reach the third round.

Neither is the number that the participants in preliminary stage: 16,000 euros for those eliminated in the first exchange, 22,000 for the winners of the first game and 34,000 for those who make it to the main draw.

In this way, for example, Pedro Martínez already has a guaranteed 103,000 euros after passing the previous stagean amount that will increase if he advances in the tournament.

Doubles players, as usual, will earn less. The winners pocket 590,000 euros, and the finalists 295,000. Semifinalists will win 148,000 and quarterfinalists 80,000, while those eliminated in the third round will get 43,000, those who fall in the second round 27,000 and those who do not make it past the debut 17,000.
