“They’re putting the City on a pedestal for something we’ve already achieved”

The former striker of Manchester Utd, dwight yorkhas called for more recognition of his former team’s Treble-winning exploits as expectations grow for Manchester City to emulate their cross-city rivals’ historic achievement in 1999.

City won the Premier League last week and will become only the second team to win all three trophies if they win the FA Cup and the Champions League final against Inter next month. That would see Pep Guardiola’s side equal what Alex Ferguson’s side achieved 24 years ago and Yorke, a key figure in that team, wants more recognition of his team-mates’ exploits.

“They’re not surpassing us, they’re building on what we’ve already achieved,” Yorke said during a visit to Hong Kong this week. “I think people tend to forget that, they are trying to put this City team on a pedestal by doing something that no other team has done. In fact, Manchester United can break the City will be hoping to win all three trophies, as Erik ten Hag’s team will play against them in the FA Cup final on June 3.

City’s success has prompted comparisons between Guardiola’s and Ferguson’s teams, but Yorke believes that discussion should wait until the end of the season. “Why are we talking about it if they haven’t done it yet? We have to wait until you have, then let’s have the debate. People are already ahead.”
