“After almost 11 years on the board, I am very tired,” he said. Edwin Vander Sar in a statement on Tuesday, announcing that he was leaving the ajax. “It doesn’t feel good to have to make imminent decisions about the future of this great club. So it’s my decision to quit now”, were his first words.
“We wanted Edwin to stay, but he already made his decision. We have to respect that,” supervisory board chairman Pier Eringa said for his part. “Last season did not reflect the entire time he was in charge of Ajax. The club was successful, saw a lot of growth and gained international exposure,” he added.
Ajax sacked manager Alfred Schreuder in January after a disappointing start to the season and named former defender John Heitinga to replace him until the end of the season. Schreuder was brought in to replace Erik ten Hag, who joined Manchester United last year after guiding Ajax to Dutch league titles and the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019.
