Date:

Ang Magic Boxthe stadium where the Mutua Madrid is openwill have a new covered track with a capacity for 10,000 spectators, which will open in 2025 and construction will require an investment of 18 million euros.

the municipal company Destination in Madrid signed a contract this Friday with Dominique Perraultthe architect of the stadium, for studying the needs and drafting the initial expansion project, according to City of Madrid in a press release.

This expansion is designed to “guarantee matches of great importance” within the same tournament, as requested by the ATP and WTA bodies.

The new track will meet “the latest requirements in terms of sustainable development, energy efficiency and use of recyclable materials”, which aims to optimize all types of resources and reduce consumption costs. .

To this end, the Madrid Destino is now formal, in the presence of the mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida, and the delegate for Culture, Tourism and Sports, Andrea Levy, the contract with the architect responsible for the original project of the stadium this for the study of needs and realization of the initial project for the expansion of the new space.

The planned investment for the implementation of the work is 18 million euros, which will be shared 50% between the City Council of the capital and Madrid Trophy Promotion (MTP), the company that manages the organization of the Mutua Madrid Open.

Caja Mágica, located in the San Fermín neighborhood (Usera), annually hosts the Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament, an ATP and WTA Master 1000 tournament. To do this, it has three stadiums or tracks with capacity for 12,500, 2,900 and 1,900 seats, respectively.

The three courts have an exclusive mobile roof with high technical quality that ensures the development of the tournament with three simultaneous battles even in bad weather conditions.

However, “large differences in capacity between courts lead to difficulties in simultaneously programming essential battles in the same tournament”, as requested by the ATP and WTA bodies.

Due to the growing evolution of this international tournament, the expansion of Caja Mágica is planned with the construction of a new stadium or semi-permanent fourth court, oriented on the north-south axis, like other existing court, in coherence. and uniformity of sun and shadows projected across all playing courts.

The new track will be built on the current lake area and will be second in order of importance of the four Caja Mágica dwellings.

This growth will position the Madrid Open as the first or second best international tournament in the Master 1000 category.

This tournament is guaranteed to continue until 2030 in Madrid with the effect of an agreement signed in September 2021 between the City Council of the capital, Madrid Destino and MTP.

Designed by the studio of French architect Dominique Perrault, the Caja Mágica currently consists of three stadiums or tracks grouped together in a large cubic volume encased by a characteristic semi-transparent metal mesh enclosure floating above the ground.

The architecture in steel, aluminum, concrete and glass is arranged in a large artificial lake and a system of bridges or footbridges, which connects it to the San Fermín neighborhood and to Manzanares Park.
